A medieval Italian child with osteochondritis dissecans of the cuboid
Abstract
Thirty medieval–post-medieval skeletons were rescued in advance of redevelopment around the church of San Pietro Barisano, Matera, Basilicata, in southern Italy. One individual, a 7–8-year-old medieval child, displayed a large circular defect of the left cuboid. This is considered to be an example of osteochondritis dissecans (OD). The atypical site (apparently the first published case of OD involving the cuboid) and the young age of the ‘patient’ has prompted this short note.
